6/19 Kiln Results

June 22, 2021

This firing had some Christmas and also some Halloween. Overall I'm happy. This firing used a few new glazes. I'm super excited about my new Clayscapes glazes and I've learned that Pitch Black needs to be thinner. Also tried out a few new Kentucky Mudworks glazes that I'm loving. However, the top thing is defintely my first egg tray.

First the Christmas - like opening a present.

Bottle melting

June 21, 2021

I have a huge backlog of bottles to melt, but I was asked if I had any pictures. Melting bottles is fairly simple if you have a kiln. The most difficult thing is getting off labels - some come off easy and some require a whole lot of hot water and scrubbing. After that it's just about arranging them in the kiln.

Some glasses do not like to fuse together well. I find that if I can see a great difference in the quality of the glass that it's likely they will have an issue.

Coke bottles really like to fuse together. Very little chance of cracks. This is an example of what happens with any bottle that has enamel on it. Some of it comes off, but you will be able to see it. I have drunk some bad wine to get to a cool bottle.

These are tiny little vinegar jars that fused together nicely.

Sometimes you get bubbles depending on how the glass cools. I love how they look.

Bottle melting

If a bottle has raised glass areas they will come through.

Blue bottles are my favorite, but harder to find.

For a normal size bottle 4 across is the most I can do in my kiln.

crochet

new sweaters

June 20, 2021

Got the kiln going last night so today is all waiting for it to cool.

I finished two crochet projects this week.

This one is using a Miss Babs garden variety set. I didn't follow a pattern, just had a vision in my head and went with it.

The second one is from a new yarn company I found during the online (Maryland) Sheep and Wool - Neighborhood Fiber Co. this is the yarn they made for the festival Leakin Park. It's so very pretty. I started with a pattern that I can't seem to find, but quickly went off script and just went with it.

So many flowers

June 19, 2021

The garden is just exploding with flowers right now. I can't decide which is my favorite. Spent most of the day in the garage glazing. Used all of my new Clayscapes glazes. Still so many more combos to try. I will fire the kiln overnight and then the waiting begins.

Aside from the gerbera daisies that I bought at the store on impulse and the petunias that I grew from seed, all of these flowers come back year over year. So many flowers

Clayscapes glaze mixing

June 18, 2021

This has been a very long week. Flew out Sunday for my first business trip since before covid. I forgot how exhausting that can be. However, it was so amazing to actually be in a room full of people. We had a great onboarding session for the new folks.

Last night I finally started mixing my new Clayscapes glazes. Can't wait to try them out. Hoping I'll get enough glazing done to do a glaze firing by the end of the weekend. Clayscapes glaze mixing

All the stuff I was making last week is drying nicely. My new spaghetti bowl is all setup and came out of the mold.
